Statutory Mandate and Election

Legal Mandate

The legal mandate of the Women’s Representative is to prevent discrimination against female researchers, female faculty members, and female students, and to support the university in fulfilling its duty to promote gender equality and work toward eliminating existing discrimination (BayHIG, Art. 22, para. 3, sentences 1 and 2).

Committees

As faculty women’s representatives, you are voting members of the Faculty Council, the Faculty Executive Board, appointment and selection committees, department leadership, study grant committees, and all advisory committees established by the Faculty Council.

Women's representatives serve as points of contact for the entire faculty regarding equal opportunity, gender equality, and the advancement of women.

Election of the Faculty Women's Representative

All full-time faculty members are eligible to vote for this position; the Faculty Council serves as the electoral body for the Faculty Women’s Representative. Any female professor, assistant professor, research assistant, or student in the faculty who is eligible to vote may nominate candidates (GO § 46, 4).

The women's representatives for the university and for the faculties are elected from among the university's full-time (academic) staff. Full-time employment is a prerequisite for serving as a women's representative.

Information about counseling

Faculty women's representatives offer counseling to female researchers and students on topics such as career planning during their studies and in academia, scholarship awards, workplace conflicts at the university, sexual harassment, and gender equality issues.

As a general rule, every counseling session should be documented. In particular, they must be recorded numerically in accordance with Section 10 of the guidelines. For counseling in cases of sexual harassment, discrimination, bullying, or stalking, the Office of the Women’s Representative, in consultation with the Conference of Women’s Representatives, has developed two documents that faculty women’s representatives and other counselors can use as a resource during their counseling sessions. These documents are primarily intended to provide guidance and should therefore not be considered binding instructions.

“Meet the Prof” for female researchers and students at the faculty level

Female role models serve as crucial examples for female researchers, helping them develop a sense of career direction and providing important motivation as they advance in their careers. We support faculty women’s representatives in inviting suitable role models to their departments and organizing “Meet the Prof” events. The University Women’s Representative also offers financial support as needed to cover any fees or travel expenses (within Europe).

Equal opportunity at the state and federal levels

State Conference of Women's and Equality Officers at Bavarian Universities (LaKoF)

LaKoF Bayern is an association of women’s and equal opportunity officers at Bavarian universities. It is dedicated to the advancement of women and has been committed to gender equality in higher education and academia since its founding in 1989. Through statements and recommendations, it influences the discourse on higher education policy and maintains close contact with the Bavarian State Ministry of Higher Education, Research, and Innovation (BayStMWK). The goal is to increase the proportion of women at all levels of academic qualification as well as in leadership positions in research and teaching institutions, particularly in professorial positions.

The responsibilities of the Women's Affairs Officer and the Equal Opportunity Officer are governed by the Bavarian Higher Education Innovation Act (BayHIG) and the Bavarian Equal Opportunity Act (BayGIG).

The members of LaKoF Bavaria are the women's representatives of the Bavarian
Universities and universities of applied sciences (HAW).
Each of the two university groups has a spokesperson elected from among its own members.
